![]() The game oozes nostalgia, and when paired with its nice 16-bit sound track, I felt like I was back playing games while hiding under a doona with my GameBoy Colour and trusty wormy light once again. ![]() You can choose from a number of pixel hairdos for your character which is a nice addition, plus there are lots of visually diverse landscapes that vary from lively and bright to creepy and dark. One thing Monster Crown nails is its retro pixel art style. You’ll encounter, befriend and/or tussle with multiple parties with vested interests in the island’s political scene, and in between all that you’ll also tame a monster or two (or 200). It doesn’t take long before your innocent desire to tame monsters embroils you in a sinister plot for control of the island and its inhabitants. After proving to your parents that you can look after yourself you head out into the great big wide world. You will begin the game as a teenager working on the family farm who wants to leave home and become a monster tamer, so you fill out a magazine survey in order to get sent your first monster who hopefully matches your personality. It’s also girt by a sea full of crazy powerful monsters, such that no one ventures far out on the ocean due to the very real danger of becoming sea food. Monster Crown is set on Crown Island, a land with a horrific past of bloody wars and righteous heroes. Developed by a single person, I had my fingers crossed that I’d be happy adding this one to my collection. I was intrigued by Monster Crown when I first discovered it due to its retro art style and darker themes in both its monster design and story. Monster taming games are some of my favourites as there’s lots of collecting as well as interesting stories and usually a menagerie of cute and cuddly creatures. Both parents are consumed in a separate process called Fusion.Monster taming RPGs can either be great and unique, or appear like poor man’s imitations of the colossal Pokémon franchise that dominates the scene. Initially, the breeding process would consume both parents, but it has been changed so that an egg is produced and both the parents are kept.In this method, you only select one parent monster and another monster is selected from the online server to be combined with your monster to produce a random offspring. Net Egg is a planned feature, not currently implemented in the game. However, it will be useful for quickly checking the stats and color of the produced offspring, without the need to wait for the egg to hatch. The embryo will join the team, but will be weak and unable to attack or defend itself until it reaches level 4. High Temperature Breeding is a planned feature, not currently implemented in the game, in which the player can select two monsters and produce an offspring embryo, skipping the egg phase. ![]() Please note that all of these are subject to change, considering the Early Access status of the game. The offspring can also inherit moves of each parent, to a maximum of 5, if compatible.īrilliant monsters, when selected as secondary parents, will pass on a random arrangement of colors to the offspring. ![]() The resulting offspring starts at level 4 and inherits the primary parent's species and attack, speed and defense stats, while the secondary parent will pass on its type, colors and resistance, magic and hitpoints stats. The offspring will start as an egg that will take some time in the incubator to hatch. Currently the only way to breed, for this method you must select a primary and a secondary parent.
